A view on Climate Change and Security from the Regions

Droughts and forest fires in Central Europe, food crises in East Africa and catastrophic floods in South Asia – the consequences of climate change are becoming visible almost daily. In addition to the immediate humanitarian impacts, practitioners and scientists from a wide range of disciplines are also asking what consequences global climate change will have on political constellations. Do they fuel conflicts or do they offer room for cooperation and rapprochement? Will they be overshadowed by global power rivalries, or will these geopolitical disputes take a back seat to the existential challenges facing humanity?

The third day of Bonn Future Lab 2022 kicks off with this public discussion event to provide an on-the-ground perspective on important issues from the climate change-security nexus. Representatives from the foreign offices of Bonn Future Lab 2022’s cooperation partners, Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and Hanns Seidel Foundation, will share their experiences from particularly affected countries and regions. This will allow German and European perceptions to be compared with the assessment on the ground. How do politics, business and civil society perceive climate change in different regions and what political necessities do they derive from it? Where do problems and potential conflicts arise? Where, however, are sustainable, locally adapted and innovative solution strategies being developed? Is there scope and willingness for international efforts to meet the manifold challenges?

Dürren und Waldbrände in Mitteleuropa, Nahrungsmittelkrisen in Ostafrika und katastrophale Überflutungen in Südasien – die Konsequenzen des Klimawandels werden beinahe täglich sichtbar. Neben den unmittelbaren humanitären Auswirkungen stellt sich Praxis und Wissenschaft unterschiedlichster Disziplinen auch die Frage, welche folgen globale klimatische Veränderungen auf politische Konstellationen haben. Befeuern sie Konflikte oder bieten sie Raum für Kooperation und Annäherung? Werden sie durch globale Machtkonkurrenzen überschattet oder treten diese geopolitischen Auseinandersetzungen in Zukunft anhand der existenziellen Menschheitsherausforderung in den Hintergrund?

Der dritte Tag des Bonn Future Labs 2022 startet mit dieser öffentlichen Diskussionsveranstaltung, um eine Vor-Ort-Perspektive auf wichtige Fragen aus dem Nexus Klimawandel-Sicherheit zu werfen. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Auslandsbüros der Kooperationspartner des Bonn Future Lab 2022, Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit und Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, werden ihre Erfahrungen aus besonders betroffenen Ländern und Regionen teilen. Somit können deutsche und europäische Perzeptionen mit der Einschätzung vor Ort abgeglichen werden. Wie nehmen Politik, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft den Klimawandel in verschiedenen Regionen wahr und welche politischen Notwendigkeiten leiten sie daraus ab? Wo entstehen Probleme und Konfliktpotenziale? Wo werden allerdings auch nachhaltige, lokal angepasste und innovative Lösungsstrategien entwickelt? Gibt es Spielräume und Bereitschaft für internationale Anstrengungen, den mannigfaltigen Herausforderungen zu begegnen?

The Bonn Future Lab is a new multi-day format consisting of two core segments: First, an international conference day, which will focus on global megatrends, especially from a security but also from a development perspective (in 2022: “Climate Change and Security”). In a second step, this international conference day will be combined with a Strategic Foresight Workshop, in which the techniques and methods of strategic foresight will be conveyed to young multipliers (“decision-makers of the day after tomorrow”), who have previously gained an insight into the current scientific debates through the expert discussions with renowned national and international experts.
