Responsibilities: Policy-oriented research on environmental risks, including environmentally induced migration, climate risk insurance, as well as education and capacity building. Associate Professor at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn.
2001-2011: Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), Davos, Switzerland. Division Leader Avalanche Warning and Risk Management, since 2006 head of SLF. Responsibilities: Early warning systems for snow avalanches and hydrological hazards, measurement and observation networks, risk management frameworks, as well education and training of safety professionals.
1988-2001: Industrial research, ABB Ltd., Switzerland. Responsibilities: Physical and numerical modeling of electric power systems, particularly the application of high temperature superconductivity, and materials research.
1996 and 1997: consulting engineer at ABB AB Kabeldon in Alingsås, Sweden.
1990-1991: One-year stay at the Center for Theoretical Solid State Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (theory of electrical properties of nano materials).
