Our Mission

The Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research was founded in November 2017 at COP23 under the leadership of the University of Bonn with the aim of strengthening knowledge and competences for sustainable development. Six established Bonn institutions are behind this alliance: BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion), the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein Sieg, University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), the Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and the University of Bonn with its Center for Development Research (ZEF).

Together we are developing the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB) – a platform for the society-wide work on a sustainable future. We invite you to come together and work with your different ideas, expertise and perspectives. Sustainable development needs a variety of perspectives, and we want to encourage, support and use them.

The development of the ICB is financially supported by the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Ministry of Culture and Science), with a contribution from the University of Bonn.

The Head Office

The lynchpin of the joint work is the Head Office, which bundles the joint efforts from strategy and research, education, and transfer formats over alliance events to public relations and directs them along the Bonn Alliance agenda. Joint activities include short programs such as the Alumni Spring School, lecture series, network events, workshops and many more. How these formats make an important contribution to the ICB can be seen in this film:

Our Partners

The profile of the institutional research landscape in Bonn is characterized by broad expertise in development policy and development research. Particularly noteworthy are the United Nations University with its Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) as a globally operating scientific institution, as well as the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion), which, as non-university institutes, deal with different dimensions of sustainability and global change from the perspective of development research or peace and conflict research in an interdisciplinary manner and organize their research in powerful worldwide networks.

The Excellence University of Bonn brings together discipline-oriented sustainability research in the so-called Transdisciplinary Research Area “Innovation and Technology for a Sustainable Future”. With its Center for Development Research (ZEF), it also has an interdisciplinary research institution that conducts international research on development issues and central sustainability topics. The overall picture is rounded off by the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), which, together with its International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE), conducts research into innovative and interdisciplinary solutions for sustainable development. As a University of Applied Sciences, H-BRS also focuses on the transfer of science into a sustainable economy.

The policy relevance of the Bonn Alliance partner institutes is demonstrated by the fact that BICC, DIE and ZEF have been listed among the most influential global think tanks for years.

Our Work

The cooperation within the framework of the Bonn Alliance includes collaboration in joint research projects and symposia as well as in competence development through teaching and further training courses on sustainability.

The aim of the joint work is to establish the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB) among the three research priorities of digitalization and artificial intelligence, mobility and migration, and bioeconomy. Structurally, the ICB will cover research, teaching and transfer.
